Shakespeare Plays
I was commissioned by Barrie Rutter - the Artistic Director of the Northern Broadsides Theatre Company - to produce one painting for each of the thirty-seven Shakespeare plays. He wanted ‘The Complete Works’ - ‘After feeling a slight pang at the incomplete canon experience’.
The approach to each play was my choice; a character analysis, a visual precis of relationships, a summation of the play or scene, the feel/flavour of each work etc. The only condition Barrie imposed was that he didn’t want to be drip-fed, he wanted to see the whole ‘Works’ exhibited at Dean Clough Galleries in Halifax - to experience the ‘full blast of the Bard in one fell swoop’.
